The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a port in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, between Wednesday night and Thursday, causing shock waves between buildings in the area. But so far no casualties have been reported.
According to Reuters, fire trucks and emergency services vehicles were seen heading south from Dubai. This is the highway from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.
According to the government-run Dubai Media Office, the blast occurred on a container ship in the port of Jabal Ali as it tried to dock at a pier. It is the largest seaport in the Middle East.
He said the fire caused by the explosion was contained and no casualties have been reported so far. The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined.
"I saw it for the first time in 15 years".
The blast was so loud it was heard by several citizens in Dubai, according to the AFP. Eyewitnesses said that their homes experienced tremors as windows and doors were shaking.
According to the AFP, three of the 130 containers on board contained flammable substances. The crew consisted of 14 people.
"It was on my balcony," Clemens Lefex, who lives near the scene, told AFP. My friend saw a yellow object that shone like the sun. I took a picture of him and then I heard an explosion.
"I've lived here for 15 years and this is the first time I've seen or heard anything like this," a resident of Dubai's Medina district told AFP.
These incidents are rare in the UAE, especially Dubai. There are seven emirates in the country, one of which is Dubai.
Jabal Ali Port was named one of the 10 largest ports in the world in terms of revenue. It is the largest commercial area in the Middle East with more than 8,000 companies and accounted for 23% of Dubai's total production last year.
Dubai is home to more than 3 million people, most of whom are foreigners. In 1950 only 15,000 people lived here.
