In Nigeria, gunmen kidnapped at least 140 students from their school in the north-west of the country.

The mother of a 15-year-old student attending Bethel Baptist School in Kaduna, 80km from Zaria, Nigeria, told the News Agency that large numbers of gunmen on motorcycles arrived at the school and went through security fences. and school. I went in and kidnapped the children.

According to a police statement, the gunmen "overpowered the school security guards and went to the children's shelter, where they kidnapped the children and took them to the forest."

However, police said they had rescued 26 people, including a teacher, in the rescue operation so far.

It should be noted that in recent days kidnappings for ransom in schools, universities and other parts of the country have increased.

Eight people were abducted Sunday morning by the Zaria National Center for Tuberculosis and Leprosy.

Among the abductees were two nurses and a one-year-old child.

The local Christian leader said there were 180 children in the school, of whom only 20 have been identified. He said it was possible that some of the children had escaped.

Police say the attackers involved in the kidnapping at Zaria hospital were a group of local robbers who also opened fire on a city police station.

According to the police, while the station was under attack, another group attacked the hospital.

A local resident told AFP that the attack on the police station was a hoax and that the real target was hospital staff.

A hospital staff member told The News Agency Hausa on condition of anonymity that the attackers kidnapped at least 12 people, including three children.

The government official said his army was doing everything possible to find the hostages.

More than a thousand students have been kidnapped and nine murdered since December. In addition, there are still more than 200 students and the youngest of them is three years old.

Authorities say the incidents in the north-west of the country were perpetrated by criminals whose real purpose is to get the ransom money.

Since the kidnapping of 276 schoolchildren by the Boko Haram militant group of Cheboksary secondary school in Borno state, Nigeria seven years ago, armed assailants have kidnapped students.
